Berkeley Emergency Storm Shelter (BESS)


Full Description
The City of Berkeley funds an emergency storm shelter that is designed to open on as needed basis on particularly cold and/or rainy nights during the winter months, beginning December 2, 2013 and is in operation through the night of Wednesday, April 16, 2014. The shelter can accommodate up to 65 men and women on a first-come, first-served basis. If they are anticipating rain or temperatures 40 degrees or below during the hours of nightly operation they will usually open up that night. The decision to open the shelter is usually made each morning before noon. Nightly shelter can open as early as 7pm and as late as 11pm, with opening time decided by the church and the different activities happening that evening. The shelter is closed each morning by 6:30 AM when it is vacated. The shelter has no bathing or shower facilities and no laundry facilities.
